The Beginning

How It All Started

The collective effort that brought together generations of FC&RI alumni.

MEFGAA originated from the collective efforts of alumni from the Forest College & Research Institute (FC&RI), Mettupalayam, who came together to formalize a strong and active alumni network.

The foundation was laid on 13th January 2024, during the 1st Alumni Meet held at FC&RI, Mettupalayam under the able guidance of the then Dean and our beloved alumni Dr. A. Balasubramanian, after 38 long years.

The 2020 batch students were roped in for coordinating the individual batches starting from 1985 to 2019 — totally 34 batches — wherein individual WhatsApp groups were initiated. Dr. V. Priyanka coordinated the entire process for the Alumni Meet.

At the alumni meet, Thiru. V. Thirunavukarasu was unanimously nominated as Interim Committee President, while Dr. V. Priyanka was nominated as Interim Committee Secretary. This marked the beginning of a structured journey to form a legally registered alumni society focused on professional collaboration, community support, and institutional development.

Purpose

SELF (Students Educational Fund) is created for economically supporting students at Forest College and Research Institute (FC&RI), Mettupalayam during the period of their course.

Target Group

B.Sc. (Forestry) students from 1st year to final year — covering the period after six months of admission up to the final year examination.

Eligible Activities

  • College tuition fees (part or full)
  • Mess bill (standard fixed amount, revised by the committee)
  • Study tours

Mode of Payment

Direct bank transfer to the college / mess account only.

Source of Fund

  1. SELF corpus collected from members and deposited in the bank — interest earned is used as the source of fund.
  2. Life membership amount is also placed as a fixed deposit; interest earned funds SELF.
  3. Any interested member may sponsor a request from time to time.

Number of Students Supported

  • One deserving student per year will be supported with full tuition fee.
  • If two deserving candidates within a year, tuition fee shall be supported during alternate semesters for both.
  • For more than two students, MEFGAA may seek special funding from members; allocation decided based on contributions received.
  • Mess bill and study tour support depend on availability of funds per batch.

Fund Allocation

The total interest earned during the previous year is equally divided across all four batches.

Student Eligibility

  • The economically most disadvantaged student shall be identified.
  • The batch coordinator identifies the student based on six months of observation.
  • Family economic background must be considered.
  • Students eligible for a bank education loan shall first be assisted in getting the loan.
  • Positive attitude and academic performance are also considered.
  • A student who has failed in any one subject is not eligible for further support.
  • Students already covered under existing scholarship schemes (incl. 7.5% Government Quota and First Graduate) shall not be considered.
  • Support is provided only via bank transfer to the college/mess or direct contribution.

Years of Support

A student may receive SELF support for up to two years on the recommendation of the batch coordinator. For 3 or 4 years of support, the recommendation of the Dean is required in addition to the student application and coordinator recommendation.

SELF Management Committee

A three-member committee constituted for a period of three years, with the following responsibilities:

  1. Collection of SELF corpus fund.
  2. Verifying the genuineness of submitted applications via teaching faculty & PG Alumni.
  3. Considering coordinator / Dean recommendations in finalizing funding support.
  4. Coordinating individual volunteer support.
  5. The decision of the committee is final.
  6. The Treasurer supports the committee for fund availability and dispersal.

Validity of the SoP

This SoP shall be revised once every 5 years by the Executive Committee of MEFGAA. Recommendations from the SELF Management Committee shall be considered during revision.

Expected Fundraising Outlook

It is expected to collect ₹10 lakhs as SELF corpus and equally increase Life Members to 200 — collecting ₹20 lakhs more. The total ₹30 lakhs at ~6% interest yields ~₹1.8 lakhs/year, supporting ₹45,000 per batch per year.
